Growing COVID-19 infections are worrying governments around the world. France has recorded a record number of infections, more than 200,000 in a single day. Italy, Ireland and Portugal have also announced a record number of new cases. Officials say skyrocketing infection rates are driven by the highly contagious variant of omicron. While countries are still grappling with an increasing number of cases, health authorities are also under pressure to reduce isolation requirements for people infected or in contact with a positive case. The United States recently shortened the quarantine period, and the German health minister says he is considering a similar move.
